Yoga is an ancient practice that offers techniques for improving the efficiency of the body and for handling the stress of
everyday life.  The practice of doing poses and breathing exercises is called hatha yoga.  There are many styles of
hatha yoga based on the teachings of different yoga masters.  At The Yoga Room we teach the Iyengar method of
hatha yoga which is based on the teachings of the living master B.K.S. Iyengar.  Iyengar yoga emphasizes postural
alignment and uses props (such as blocks, blankets, straps, etc.) to achieve better alignment for a safe and effective
yoga practice.

Alignment of the body enables the student to stay in the pose longer and thereby gain more of the benefits of
the pose.  The physical benefits of yoga include the toning and stretching of muscles which leads to greater
joint mobility and stability as well as enhancing the functioning of the internal organs (digestive, circulatory,
respiratory, hormonal, etc.)  Even more importantly the practice of yoga increases ones ability to concentrate
and function with a clear mind.  This strengthens the connection between the physical and spiritual aspects of
our beings - integrating the body, mind and spirit.
