In Traditional classes, teachers will emphasize postural alignment in poses and may use
props to help students achieve better alignment for a safe and effective yoga practice.
Alignment of the body enables the student to stay in the pose longer and thereby gain more of
the benefits of the pose. Depending on the instructor's philosophy, some traditional classes
integrate elements of flow or motion in transition between poses.
Aerial classes offer students a fun and different way to approach their yoga practice. With the
help of a fabric sling suspended above the ground, the dynamic of one's practice is changed in
a number of ways. When suspended, the spine naturally decompresses and the pressure on
joints is greatly reduced, allowing for more ease in doing a wide range of poses. Backbends
and inversions are much more accessible to students. By reducing or totally eliminating
'weight-bearing' on the joints, flexibility increases significantly. But don't be fooled...this is also
a surprisingly intense "core" workout since you can't help but engage your core muscles to
balance and steady yourself while suspended! Despite it's newness, Aerial Yoga classes
remain as true to the principle of Yoga as Traditional Yoga classes.
Yoga is an ancient practice that offers techniques for
improving the efficiency of the body and for handling
the stress of everyday life. The practice of doing poses
and breathing exercises is called hatha yoga. There
are many styles of hatha based on the teachings of
different yoga masters. At The Yoga Room, our
instruction is based on several of these
styles, depending on the teacher. See our instructors'
page and calendar for more specific info.
The physical benefits of yoga include the toning and
stretching of muscles which leads to greater joint
mobility and stability as well as enhancing the
functioning of the internal organs (digestive, circulatory,
respiratory, hormonal, etc.). The practice of yoga also
increases ones ability to concentrate and function with
a clear mind. This strengthens the connection between
the physical and spiritual aspects of our beings -
integrating the body, mind and spirit.

a couple frequently asked questions:
What if I'm not flexible?
A perceived sense of inflexibility is the most common hindrance that
prevents people from trying yoga. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, it
is about stretching your body, quieting the mind, and healing the soul. The
more inflexible you are, the more you need yoga. You become flexible by
doing yoga.
What if I've never practiced yoga?
In pacing yourself, this class is very beginner friendly, and we help new
students by offering modifications, encouragement and support. You do not
need any experience; you do not need to be "in shape"; you just need a
willing mind and the desire to change your life forever.
